CPS Virtual Learning Student Code of Conduct
CPS provides safe environments, conducive to learning in all class settings, including but not limited to virtual learning. Appropriate student behavior is expected of all students whether or not they are participating in virtual courses and / or activities. Below are the expectations and clarification of what constitutes appropriate interactions with CPS faculty, staff, and students.
Classroom Environment During Virtual Learning
When attending virtual class meetings, activities, and / or discussions, students should participate with their CPS-issued Chromebook and camera on as if they were attending class in a face-to-face traditional classroom. Only the student enrolled in an assigned teacher’s virtual classroom should be visible and heard on the microphone. Students attending virtual classes while at home should avoid having siblings, pets, parents, etc. in view of the class to avoid disruptions and interruptions to the learning environment. Students should, as much as possible, ensure that they are in a quiet setting, free of unnecessary household noises, such as background conversations, televisions, cell phone noises, and radios. While in the virtual classroom, students should adhere to the dress code policy while in view of the class. In addition, students should be aware of their background views while participating in a virtual setting. Images displayed that would be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct are subject to disciplinary action.
Interactions with CPS Faculty, Staff, and Students in Virtual Learning
While in virtual classrooms, students should address all CPS faculty and staff members with the courtesy expected by education professionals. Students should communicate with all CPS faculty, staff, and students in a polite and courteous manner to support a positive learning environment and be of an educational nature. Students must use the CPS email account and other CPS-sanctioned communication methods. CPS Google Workspace profile pictures should be an appropriate headshot of the student only. CPS reserves the right to determine if a profile picture is inappropriate.
In addition, students should only participate in activities / meetings for courses in which they are enrolled. Students are prohibited from sharing course links or facilitating the involvement of students who are not enrolled in the course. Links to courses should only be generated by the teacher. Content shared virtually should be used for educational purposes only. Capturing content, screenshots, pictures, audio, and / or video, is only permitted with the written consent of the teacher and in accordance with the Student Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
Students are expected to abide by the CPS Honor Code and all CPS School Board Policies and Regulations. Copying the work of others, allowing others to knowingly copy a student’s work, and / or misusing content from the Internet could result in disciplinary action. Collaboration with other students on your CPS assignments is permitted when directed by your teacher. Parents should not log in to a student account and complete coursework on behalf of the student. In addition, parents are asked not to log in to student accounts to attend any video-conferencing sessions unless with express permission from the teacher.
Consequences in a Virtual Learning Environment
Inappropriate use of CPS technology resources or behavior may result in revocation of technology access, disciplinary action, and / or legal action in accordance with the CPS Student Handbook, CPS Employee Manual, or other relevant School Board policies.
