When attempting to print from Synergy on a new device, users may find that nothing happens when they select the print option. This is often caused by Chrome's popup blocker preventing the Synergy PDF preview window from opening. When popups are blocked, the PDF preview never appears, and the print job cannot proceed.
Symptoms
- User can print from other applications (email, web, documents, etc.) on the same device
- Printer is connected and functioning
- Selecting "Print" in Synergy produces no visible result — no preview window appears
- No error message is displayed
Resolution Steps
The resolution is essentially the same for Windows devices and Chromebooks, but there are minor differences around PDF default settings.
1. Check Chrome's Popup & Redirect Settings
Option A — Via the Synergy Tab in the browser:
- From the Synergy tab, click the Site Information icon.
- Find Pop-ups and redirects. Toggle On.
- Reload Synergy and try printing again
Option B — Via Chrome Settings:
- Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu
in the top-right corner.
- Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings
- Scroll to click Pop-ups and redirects
- Toggle the setting to Allowed (or add the Synergy URL as an allowed site)
2. Verify PDF Open Setting in Chrome
- Open Chrome and go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings
- Scroll to Additional permissions → PDF documents
- Toggle Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome to Off.
Chrome Browser Enabling PDF's to Open
3. Check default PDF Viewer in Windows
New laptops may not have a default PDF viewer configured:
- Open Windows Start Menu and type Default Apps
- Click Choose default apps by file type
- Scroll to .pdf and verify a PDF viewer is assigned (Adobe Reader, Acrobat, or Chrome)
- If no app is listed, install Adobe Reader or set Chrome as the default PDF viewer
NOTE: Right-click any PDF file → Properties → Opens with → Change → Select your preferred PDF application
